Spanning over 45 years, the story of Smith + Andersen involves many chapters dedicated to steady growth and significant expansion. Through it all, we’ve managed to cultivate a reputation for promoting the highest standards of engineering excellence.
Founded in Toronto in 1965, our first focus was in the field of mechanical building systems. Over time we’ve assembled a variety of engineering talent to both complement and add to our core strengths. Notable growth occurred in 1976-77 when we opened branch offices in Calgary and Ottawa. From there we continued to add the expertise necessary to build on our momentum and become a recognized and respected firm throughout the country.
Important developments in the course of our expansion include the establishment of our Tenant Improvement (TI) Division in 1990, which was soon followed in 1992 when we created CFMS Consulting Inc. to specialize in the commissioning of mechanical and electrical systems. In 1997 we created Smith and Andersen Electrical Engineering Inc. to focus specifically on electrical building services (now a fully integrated division of Smith + Andersen). As well, in 1999 we integrated a well-known, full-service communications consulting and project management division. In fact, in 2007 in response to requirements that commissioning be independent to the engineers, Smith + Andersen sold its ownership in the CFMS Consulting Inc. to its employees. Thus CFMS became a wholly independent company with a solid strategic alliance with Smith + Andersen for the commissioning our system designs. Further expansion includes the establishment of our Dubai office in 2007, Edmonton and Vancouver offices in 2009.
Though we emphasize the strength of our diverse skill-set, it is our capacity to leverage our specialties and undertake collaboration in-house that allows us to help clients achieve their goals on time and within budget.
Our growth over the years may confirm our status as one of Canada's most prominent engineering firms, but in our minds, reputation stands only on what we've done in the past. For us, the history of Smith + Andersen lives on in what we have yet to achieve.
