Smith + Andersen provided electrical engineering services for the tunneling portion of the Confederation Line located in Ottawa Ontario. The overall tunnel is 12.5 kilometers in length underneath the downtown core of Ottawa. Tunnel boring machines were utilized to create the tunnel.
Smith + Andersen provided utility coordination for three separate electrical services at three different locations along the tunnel and 15kV and 600V distribution was designed for each tunneling site. Services also involved assisting in the design and specifications of the portable underground substations, distribution for the tunneling and mining equipment (including ground fault and ground check systems for the underground equipment), and all surface equipment related to the project.
Emergency power distribution was designed for each site and surface and underground illumination was provided.
