An ultra-modern preservation facility, the new Library of Archives Canada Gatineau 2 Preservation Storage Facility in Quebec fittingly prioritizes resilience. The climate-controlled, energy-efficient sustainable design is targeting Net Zero Carbon, which, when achieved, will be the first archival preservation facility in the Americas to achieve this status. The building has already achieved LEED Gold certification, following the LEED V4 Building Design + Construction rating system.
The new facility is located adjacent to the existing Preservation Centre, and features the equivalent of eight and a half Olympic-sized swimming pools of collection storage capacity, as well as an automated storage and retrieval system. The facility consolidates the Library of Archives Canada’s ever-growing collection of analogue and textual holdings and audio-visual materials.
Footprint is engaged as the sustainability consultant, providing certification and energy modelling services.
Sustainability design features include a ground source heat pump system, and the implementation of low-emitting materials.
Strict indoor air quality management includes HVAC protection that covered and protected all exposed air inlets / outlets, openings, grilles, duct runs, and plenums to prevent contamination.
