Comfort first for first responders.
The Spruce Grove Protective Services building underwent expansion and renovation so it could continue to support the Spruce Grove community’s fully integrated fire and emergency medical service (EMS).
Smith + Andersen was engaged as the mechanical design consultant for the project, which involved expanding and renovating the existing building, constructed in 1973. It also included the addition of a fire station with equipment bays to accommodate 18 emergency vehicles. The facility provides 24/7 emergency coverage.
At the time of its approval in 2016, this expansion and renovation was the largest single capital project in the City of Spruce Grove’s history. It was completed in 2020.
Good to go.
The mechanical design utilizes variable air volume boxes as a cost-effective and low maintenance way to create a comfortable habitat for first responders. The 36,250 square-foot addition includes a kitchen, fitness space, administration and training areas, washrooms, and change rooms. As part of the renovations, HVAC and fire protection systems were upgraded in the existing building. The Spruce Grove Protective Services building is LEED certified.
