We’re proud to announce that effective June 1, 2026, five new principals will be joining the leadership team at Smith + Andersen.

This group reflects the strength, depth, and diversity of experience across our offices and disciplines. From electrical and mechanical engineering to building automation and smart systems, each individual has demonstrated a commitment to collaboration, technical excellence, and leadership that continues to elevate our teams and our projects.

Their appointment as principals recognizes the significant contributions they have already made to Smith + Andersen, as well as their dedication to mentorship, innovation, and the continued growth of our national practice. Below is a bit more information about each of these new principals, their career paths at Smith + Andersen, their areas of expertise, and why we’re excited to welcome them into this leadership role.

Brandon Hayes

P.Eng., B.A.Sc., LEED Green Associate

Toronto

Brandon Hayes began his career at Smith + Andersen as a co-op student in 2008 and has grown into a versatile leader with experience across residential, commercial, post-secondary, healthcare, courthouse, and mission critical projects. His early years on the Bridgepoint Hospital project helped shape his approach to taking on new challenges and expanding his technical expertise. Brandon is committed to continuous learning and believes strongly in mentorship, drawing on the guidance he received throughout his own career. He is also an active contributor to many internal committees and development initiatives, reflecting his dedication to strengthening the firm’s culture and supporting the growth of staff across S+A.

Filip Artukovic

P.Eng., LEED Green Associate

Filip Artukovic began his career at Smith + Andersen as a co-op student in 2010, completing three terms before joining full time in 2012. After early experience in the health care sector, he played a key role in growing the firm’s residential and hospitality portfolio and is now a leading contributor in that market. Filip is known for guiding large and complex projects, including mixed-use high-rise developments, master planned communities, complex retrofits, and adaptive reuse work. His strength lies in managing multidisciplinary teams, navigating fast tracked project timelines, and translating technical challenges into clear direction for clients. Filip is also actively involved in staff recruitment and mentorship, bringing clarity, collaboration, and a steady voice to even the most challenging project discussions.

Kevin Key

Kevin Key has built his career at Smith + Andersen, beginning as a co-op student more than eighteen years ago and steadily developing into a respected leader within the firm. With extensive experience across community sports and recreation facilities, post-secondary institutions, and a wide range of building sectors, Kevin is known for his strong technical foundation and his commitment to continually advancing quality across project delivery. His passion for mentorship and talent development reflects his belief in supporting the next generation of engineers, while his dedication to collaboration and excellence has made him a valued contributor to teams across the company.

Sarah Ahmed

B.A.Sc., M.Eng., LEED AP

Sarah Ahmed began her career in the engineering industry in 2006 and has built a diverse background across healthcare, commercial, residential, and institutional projects. Her early experience included large-scale security and lighting projects, followed by extensive work on tenant improvements and more complex building types. In 2014, Sarah shifted her focus toward healthcare design, where she developed a strong interest in complex systems, codes, and multidisciplinary coordination, while also taking on team leadership and technical review responsibilities. She joined Smith + Andersen in Calgary in 2021, bringing valuable experience and adapting to new regional standards and delivery models. Sarah is known for her collaborative leadership style and her commitment to supporting team growth while delivering high-quality, technically rigorous projects.

Sean Carson

Sean Carson joined Smith + Andersen in 2009, bringing early experience from a small consulting firm and quickly developing a broad foundation across institutional, sports and recreation, library, and public space projects. He later shifted his focus to high-rise residential work, contributing to major projects such as large-scale affordable housing and multi-phase condominium developments. Over time, Sean played a key role in growing the firm’s high-rise electrical practice from a small, shared group into a dedicated team delivering a wide range of residential, hotel, and mixed-use developments. He is known for his collaborative leadership style and commitment to building strong teams while delivering complex projects with consistency and quality.
