Our mechanical team has won First Place and Exemplary Decarbonization Recognition at the 2026 ASHRAE Technology Award in Category III: Health Care Facilities.

The ASHRAE Technology Awards recognize outstanding achievements by members, on an international scale, who have successfully applied innovative building design in areas of occupant comfort, indoor air quality, and energy conservation.

At the centre of this recognition is the hospital’s innovative geothermal system, which serves as the primary source for heating and cooling. Designed to deliver significant energy savings and reduce operating costs over the facility’s lifespan, the system features a geothermal field located beneath the hospital’s parking lot. This field includes approximately 375 boreholes, each drilled 600 feet deep, totaling nearly 500,000 linear feet of piping.

Smith + Andersen Principals Kevin Sharples, Kurt Monteiro, and Peter Kastelic accepted the award on behalf of the mechanical team.

This installation represents the largest geothermal system in a healthcare facility in Canada, and the second largest across all building types nationwide. It is expected to dramatically reduce annual heating energy consumption and eliminate the use of fossil fuels.

Congratulations to the entire team for this achievement and well-deserved recognition!
